The Space
Welcome to The Estuary at Fragaria, a peaceful retreat where the rhythm of the tides, abundant wildlife, and quiet surroundings invite you to truly slow down.
Perched on a sunny southeast-facing hillside overlooking Puget Sound, the property enjoys something surprisingly rare for the Pacific Northwest—sunshine throughout the day and across every season. Whether you're soaking in the hot tub beneath soaring bald eagles, paddling the shoreline by kayak, or simply enjoying your morning coffee on the covered patio, every day here feels connected to nature.
Positioned between the waters of Colvos Passage and a mature forest, The Estuary offers two completely different worlds just steps apart.
Out front, watch harbor seals resting on the rocks below, ospreys diving for fish, kingfishers racing along the shoreline, and great blue herons nesting nearby. During the summer, sea lions often join the seals, and on lucky days you may even catch a glimpse of orcas traveling through the passage.
Turn toward the woods and you'll find towering evergreens alive with songbirds, woodpeckers, owls at dusk, deer, and the occasional river otter making its way along the shoreline. Binoculars and a bird identification guide are provided for guests who enjoy wildlife watching.
The covered patio is the heart of the property. Relax in the hot tub while the tides transform the estuary below, enjoy dinner outdoors, or simply settle into a chair with a good book and let the sounds of the water replace the noise of everyday life.
Inside, the home combines comfort with thoughtful details. The living room features a 65-inch OLED television with immersive surround sound for cozy movie nights, while remote-controlled Hunter Douglas blinds let you frame the panoramic view or create a relaxing atmosphere with the touch of a button.
The fully equipped kitchen is stocked for real cooking with cooking oil, salt, pepper, and more than thirty spices.
Guests have private access to all areas included with the rental, including the spacious primary suite with its ensuite bathroom, the fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living room, covered patio with hot tub, and outdoor living spaces. One bedroom is reserved for owner storage and remains locked during your stay.
One of the property's most unique features is the detached Forest Studio, tucked just behind the home. Finished in beautiful blue pine with vaulted ceilings, French doors, and a large panoramic window overlooking the forest, it's a peaceful retreat within the retreat.
The studio includes high-speed Wi-Fi, a full-size desk, ergonomic chair, comfortable seating, a mini refrigerator, and a Rogue Echo Bike. Whether you're working remotely, writing, practicing yoga, exercising, or simply looking for a quiet place to read, it offers an inspiring place to focus while surrounded by nature.
Planning a longer escape? The Estuary is ideal for remote workers, creatives, traveling professionals, and anyone looking to trade the city for fresh air and quiet surroundings. Spend your mornings working from the Forest Studio, your afternoons exploring the shoreline by kayak, and your evenings unwinding in the hot tub beneath the stars.
Kayaks are available for exploring the shoreline, with beach access via the nearby public boat launch across from the property. During berry season, you're welcome to enjoy ripe blackberries and whatever happens to be growing in the garden.
Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, enjoying a romantic getaway, reconnecting with nature, taking a working vacation, or simply looking for a peaceful place to recharge, The Estuary at Fragaria offers an experience that's memorable in every season.
A Little History
Fragaria takes its name from the Latin word for strawberry, honoring the berry farms that flourished here in the early 1900s. The community once had its own post office and general store, serving local families and visitors arriving by steamship.
The property overlooks Colvos Passage, the scenic waterway separating the Kitsap Peninsula from Vashon Island. For thousands of years, these waters were traveled by the Suquamish people in cedar canoes. Later, the famous Mosquito Fleet connected Fragaria to the rest of Puget Sound.
In 1915, visitors could purchase a fifty-cent round-trip ticket to the Fragaria Wharf to experience the area's renowned strawberry farms. From 1922 through 1938, the historic steamer Virginia V regularly stopped here. Today, she continues sailing Puget Sound as the last remaining vessel of the Mosquito Fleet and a National Historic Landmark.
The original dock pilings still stand in the passage today, weathered by more than a century of tides and now serving as favorite perches for the same bald eagles and great blue herons you'll watch from the patio—a reminder that while the world has changed, the beauty of Fragaria has endured.
